POSITIONS AVAILABLE IN KNEIB LAB

Re-posted date: 28 Jan 2004

There are two full-time research technician positions (Research Tech I and Research Tech II) open in my laboratory at the University of Georgia Marine Institute on Sapelo Island. Both positions will support a 2-3 year project funded by the National Science Foundation and aimed at determining how landscape complexity within a region and along a steep latitudinal thermal cline affects genome-wide patterns of gene expression. The research will determine how ecological factors operating at different spatial scales affect the population biology and gene expression of Fundulus heteroclitus, a common killifish found in tidal marshes along the east coast of North America. The ultimate goal of the research is to determine the evolutionary importance of variation in gene expression. Click here for additional information on the project.

RESEARCH TECHNICIANS I and II at the University of Georgia Marine Institute. The positions will provide technical support for the project described above. The successful applicant for the Tech II post will be expected to coordinate the day-to-day operation of the field portion of this project including the assessment of landscape structure on growth, movements and population dynamics of Fundulus heteroclitus that will be conducted on-site at Sapelo Island and at other locations in Maine, Connecticut and New Jersey. Both positions will be involved in activities related to analysis of landscape patterns from aerial photos, setting up and maintaining boardwalks for accessing tidal marsh sites, maintaining electronic data monitoring equipment, and conducting frequent mark-recapture studies using both ferro-magnetic (coded microwire) and Passive Integrated Transponder (PIT) tags injected into individual fish. The incumbents will also assist in the collection and shipping of fish to the other principal investigators in this project for genetic analyses. A personal situation that allows for extended periods of travel is essential. There will likely be at least two field trips annually, each of 2-weeks duration in order to mark and recapture fish from field sites along the U.S. east coast. Preferred skills include familiarity with GIS, relational database management, statistics and field experience with mark-recapture techniques in fish populations. Minimal requirement is B.S. degree in biology with some experience, but M.S. is preferred for the Tech II post. Annual starting salaries will be consistent with University of Georgia classifications and include fringe benefits package; subsidized housing is available for technicians choosing to live on Sapelo Island (preferred).

Positions are available immediately; applications will be accepted until suitable candidates are found. Apply by sending letter of application, resume, copy of college academic record, and contact information (including phone and e-mail) for at least 3 references to: Dr. R.T. Kneib, UGA Marine Institute, Sapelo Island, GA 31327, or submit application materials or inquires by e-mail (rtkneib@uga.edu).

GRADUATE RESEARCH ASSISTANT at the University of Georgia Marine Institute. Support is available for a graduate student (MS or PhD) interested in contributing to the project described above. The student will be expected to develop a thesis project that complements the research program on functional genomics as related to landscape structure. Although it is anticipated that the student will be enrolled in formal classes, most likely in Athens, GA, he/she will be expected to assist in the field sampling portion of the project, which involves semi-annual extended travel to Maine, Connecticut, New Jersey and the coast of Georgia. Most graduate students supported by research faculty at Sapelo Island have come from Marine Sciences or Ecology at UGA, but highly qualified and motivated applicants from any graduate program will be considered.

An annual stipend of up to $12,000 - $16,000 is anticipated. In the past, students supported on research grants also have received tuition remission.

This assistantship is available immediately; applications will be accepted until a suitable candidate is found. Apply by sending letter of application, resume, including academic record and contact information (including phone and e-mail) for at least 3 references to: Dr. R.T. Kneib, UGA Marine Institute, Sapelo Island, GA 31327, or submit application materials or inquiries by e-mail (rtkneib@uga.edu).
